Earn a Great Truck Driving Salary

First year truck driving salary for an OTR driver is $35,000 - $36,000. Some schools may claim you can achieve higher income, and in some isolated cases this may be true, but we want to give you a normal, realistic expectation for your income potential.

According to the American Trucking Association, the industry expects to hire 80,000 new drivers per year over the next several years. 

Women will have even greater opportunities, as will minorities.

Improvements in equipment have greatly reduced the need for truck drivers to be "big and strong" to operate a heavy truck. 

Local truck drivers are generally paid by the hour and get overtime, usually after 40 hours. Earnings of long-haul drivers usually depend on miles driven or hours worked, as well as seniority, and the type of truck operated.

Wage scales differ from region to region and also often depend on the kind of freight carried. According to the ATA, first year truck driving salary is in the $36,000 range, while second year drivers can earn over $40,000 per year. Some experienced, specialized drivers make $60,000 a year or more.
